It is my 25th anniversary and I am spending an extra day in Texas. There was a mix up on the flight arrangements and so we are here for the extra day. I was contemplating all of my anniversaries and the one that sticks out the most would be 1999. Zach was not yet three months and he had developed RSV. We took him to urgent care because his breathing was labored, and they informed us that he was not getting enough oxygen so they sent us by ambulance to the hospital. It was my first ambulance ride and I think I would have rather been the one in need.
The Peds unit was full and we were put into a room with another baby, this one a little older. We got to know the other parents pretty well those few days we all roomed together. After three days the other baby got to go home and they told us that Zach had pneumonia on top of RSV and we would be there a little longer.
They had to put Zach's IV in through a vein in his head because the little guy was not cooperating. It looked horrible but the nurses insisted it looked worse than it was. On the last day his face almost doubled in size so they had to remove it and finally put it in his leg. He did not sleep well that week, and I didn't either.
For days we would sit with him and he would get breathing treatments every 4 hours. Tami and my mom helped care of the kids when we were both there. Travis helped when he was not working but I think I went home twice the whole time I was there. Thank goodness my family was as awesome as they were!!! I knew the girls were okay and I didn't need to worry, although poor little Britt needed a hug or two every time I saw her!
They gave us a private room for a few more days and we spent our 8th anniversary together with Zach in the hospital. It was nice to be alone but not really an it gave us a lot of time to really appreciate what matters most.
All in all we spent 7 days and 7 nights in the hospital with my little guy and he handled it pretty well. Me, on the other hand, was a basket case.
